Crisp & Crane Training Ltd

Crisp & Crane Training Limited provides Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training to staff who work with vulnerable children in Residential Care, Schools, secure children’s homes and staff working with young people in the community. This training includes de-escalation and prevention training as well as physical intervention skills if this is required in particular settings.

We also provide training for adoptive parents and foster carers as part of the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention of Families (TCIF) program. This training is a positive parenting course that includes de-escalation and prevention training.

TCI is approved by the BILD Physical Intervention Accreditation scheme through the Listening Post, and meets the Children’s Home Regulations 2015 requirements for Ofsted inspections.

Crisp & Crane Training will help build confidence when dealing with everything from low-level behaviours through to outburst and violence. Our training will teach you how to respond in a safe and therapeutic manner to each individual situation.

After completing the training you will be empowered to support children and young people to increase their coping strategies and to find more productive ways to express their feelings, wishes and emotions. When they learn new strategies they will find that this has the effect of significantly reducing the stress, anxiety and painful feelings they had previously experienced. This in turn will have a positive impact upon their futures.

What We Do

We deliver Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training or TCI for short.

TCI is BILD accredited through the Listening Post and was developed in America as part of the Residential Child Care Project at Cornell University and used all over the world as a vital resource for adults working with children and young people.

The purpose of the TCI system is to provide a crisis prevention and intervention model for residential child care organisations, school, and foster carers that will assist in:

* Preventing crises from occurring

* De-escalating potential crises

* Effectively managing acute crises

* Reducing potential and actual injury to children and staff

* Learning constructive ways to handle stressful situations

* Developing a learning circle within the organization

The benefits of using our training are to:

* Empower your staff team/carers and other adults to support children and young people in a caring and therapeutic approach when they are experiencing upset and distress.

* Enable your team to support children and young people to learn from their personal behaviours and to identify new, more positive and constructive ways in which to deal with their feelings before reaching their crisis point.

* Build confidence in your team and carers when confronted with challenging behaviour.

* Identifying behavioural triggers and appropriate responses tailored to each individual child or young person.

* Build relationships between the children, young people and their carers to reduce the ‘them and us’ dynamic.

* Reduce the number of incidents and restraints for children and young people.

* Teach your staff how to identify when it is safe for a child or young person to be restrained when their behaviour necessitates this.

* Reduce staff sickness through stress and injury.

* The option of tailored physical intervention training based on a behavioural audit.

This training will help adults improve their skill base and use other techniques which in turn will improve the experiences for children and young people.

Course Content

Through the difficulties some of the young people who we work with have experienced they will possibly display some challenging and at times aggressive behaviours such as:

* Impulsive Outbursts

* Aggression

* Running Away

* Self-Injury

* Defiance

* Inability to Regulate Emotions

* Trauma Re-Enactment

TCI is not just a training course but a programme for adults to implement to support young people exhibiting these behaviours.

The programme includes:

* Understanding the effects of trauma on a child

* Assessing the situation before responding

* Understanding the meaning of the behaviour for the child and responding to feelings and needs, and not just the behaviour

* Keeping calm when faced with challenging behaviour

* Preventing challenging behaviour – addressing setting conditions

* Active listening

* Behaviour support techniques for agitated behaviour

* Emotional first aid for emotional outbursts

* Crisis co-regulation skills for aggressive and violent behaviour

* The Life Space Interview – a therapeutic debriefing technique to help children learn from incidents and control their own behaviour

* Optional physical intervention skills

The techniques learned in TCI enable adults to tailor their responses to achieve the best possible outcome in every situation. By utilising the newly acquired skills you will be confident of dealing with any situation in an appropriate way with the best possible outcome for the young person as your priority.

This training will empower your team to adopt a caring and therapeutic way of supporting children and young people experiencing difficulties. We will teach you how to improve your personal practice in approved methods to enable you to reach your maximum caring potential.
